Google Business Profile for Local Advertising: Setup and Measurement

A practical Business Profile audit before local advertising: verify each location, connect the right Google Ads assets, map customer journeys and measure confirmed outcomes.

A Google Business Profile for local advertising is not simply a listing to complete once and forget. For a location-based business, it connects facts shown on Google Search and Maps with the next customer action: viewing hours, calling, requesting directions, opening a menu, visiting a website or making a booking. Google Ads can also use eligible profile data through location assets. An inaccurate profile can therefore send paid and organic visitors to the wrong branch, a closed venue or an unanswered phone.

This guide gives restaurants, hotels, clinics, property companies, salons and other Bali businesses a practical sequence: establish accurate location information, connect the correct assets to advertising, and then measure intent separately from confirmed commercial outcomes. It does not promise a Maps position. The goal is a clear, auditable local customer journey.

What does Google Business Profile do for local advertising?

The profile has two distinct roles. The first is organic discovery in local results on Search and Maps. Google says local results are mainly determined by relevance, distance and prominence. It also states that a business cannot request or pay Google for a better organic local ranking. Improving a profile therefore means representing the real business accurately, not buying an organic position.

The second role is paid advertising. When an eligible Business Profile is linked to Google Ads, its locations can become location assets. According to Google's official location asset documentation, formats may include an address, a map or approximate distance and can help people find a location. Eligibility does not mean every asset will appear with every impression.

Keep the roles separate in reporting. Advertising spend does not purchase an organic ranking, and more profile views do not prove more revenue. A useful dashboard distinguishes organic discovery, ad interactions and verified business outcomes.

What should you audit before linking Google Ads?

Start with ownership. The primary owner should have a durable relationship with the business. Staff and agencies should receive individual owner or manager access instead of a shared password. That preserves business control, creates clearer accountability and makes offboarding safer.

Then verify the facts for every location:

  • the name matches real-world signage and established branding;
  • the address or service area is precise and the map pin marks the correct entrance;
  • the primary category describes the core business;
  • the phone reaches the correct team during published hours;
  • regular and special hours reflect holidays and operational changes;
  • the website opens a relevant, localised page;
  • services, menus, booking links and photographs reflect the current offer.

Google's guidelines for representing a business require an accurate real-world identity. Adding a district, phone number, promotional claim or search terms to the business name purely for visibility can trigger edits or suspension. Use the dedicated address, service, category and hours fields instead.

How should categories and services support relevance?

The primary category should complete the sentence “this business is a,” not list everything the business has. A hotel containing a restaurant and spa should not automatically turn one listing into every possible category. Choose the most specific category for the main operation and add only genuinely relevant secondary categories.

Google explains that categories help connect a profile with relevant searches and may determine which profile features appear. Its Business Profile category guidance also notes that changing a category may require verification again. Avoid rotating categories to match each campaign. Record a defensible choice and revisit it only when the business itself changes.

Services, menu items, attributes and booking links help a person assess fit. They should not become a block of keyword variants. In Bali, test the next step for the actual language mix: an English profile leading to an Indonesian-only form, or a Russian advert opening an outdated English menu, creates friction that no bid adjustment can repair.

How do you connect Business Profile locations to Google Ads?

In Google Ads, add a location source through Assets or Location manager. A business that owns its locations will usually connect the Business Profile account it manages. Once access is approved and locations sync, those places can be used as location assets.

Do not automatically apply every location to every campaign. Build location groups that reflect the operating model: market, district, brand, venue type or supported language. Assign the correct group at account, campaign or ad-group level. A Ubud villa campaign should not present a Seminyak office address, and an advert for one restaurant branch should not lead to another branch with different hours and inventory.

Before launch, review the synced name, address, phone, hours and location status. Google says Business Profile data used in ad formats may also include merchant photos and videos. If a place is marked temporarily or permanently closed, its location asset will not show. The profile is therefore part of ongoing paid-media operations, not a one-time setup ticket.

Should a local customer go to the profile or the website?

Match the route to intent. Someone searching for “coffee near me” may primarily need directions, opening hours or a call button. A villa guest, medical patient or property buyer generally needs more detail, qualification and a form on the website. The profile and landing page should agree on the business name, location, offer, phone and opening hours.

Use governed UTM parameters for paid website links and preserve source data when the journey continues into a form, booking engine or WhatsApp. Our guide to tracking WhatsApp leads from advertising explains how to move from a click to an enquiry-quality signal. Businesses that need campaign and location-asset management can also review the Google Ads Bali service.

Which metrics are useful beyond a single “views” number?

Profile performance is valuable for diagnosis, but an interaction is not necessarily a customer. Google's Business Profile performance documentation describes metrics such as views, searches, direction requests, call clicks, website clicks and category-specific actions. Not every metric is available to every business, and the performance report can include activity from both organic results and Google Ads.

Use a three-level measurement model:

  1. Discovery: relevant searches and profile exposure for the intended category and catchment.
  2. Intent: a direction request, call click, website visit, menu view or booking action.
  3. Outcome: an answered conversation, qualified enquiry, confirmed booking, visit, order or verified sale.

Assign an evidence owner for the final level: reception, CRM, booking platform, POS or a controlled sheet. Without this layer, a direction request remains an intent signal and a call click remains a click, not a completed conversation. Interpret period changes alongside hours, holidays, seasonality, media budget and operational disruptions.

What commonly breaks the profile-and-advertising connection?

One mistake is creating a new listing before checking whether the business already has one. Duplicates divide reviews and access while increasing the chance of linking the wrong place. Another is allowing an agency employee's personal account to remain the sole owner. A third is syncing all locations at account level when a campaign serves only one branch.

A fourth mistake is trying to solve a weak offer with “Maps optimisation.” If prices, photos, availability and landing-page claims conflict, more traffic exposes the inconsistency faster. A fifth is reporting directions and call clicks as revenue. A sixth is implying that connecting Google Ads secures the top organic Maps position. Paid and organic surfaces may meet in one journey, but they follow different systems.

What should the first 30 days look like?

Week 1: access and factual accuracy

Document the primary owner, all managers and every active profile. Check signage, address, pin, primary category, phone, website, hours and location status. Save the starting values and review date so later changes have context.

Week 2: customer journey and Ads connection

Separate campaigns by location and intent, configure the right location groups, review destination pages and add consistent UTM parameters. On a mobile device, test a call, directions request, website visit and enquiry. This catches routing problems before they consume meaningful budget.

Weeks 3–4: lead quality and operating feedback

Review search terms, spend, profile interactions and confirmed enquiries together each week. Log inaccurate hours, missed calls, broken forms and branch-level differences. Change one significant element at a time and record why; otherwise improvement or decline cannot be attributed responsibly.

When is a separate Google Business Profile audit worthwhile?

A dedicated audit is useful when a business has duplicates, several branches, uncertain ownership, ads pointing to the wrong location, frequently outdated hours or many interactions without verified enquiries. A single well-governed location may only need a monthly operational review with one accountable owner.

ALEX-DIGITAL can review local advertising in Bali as one system: Business Profile, Google Ads, destination pages, measurement and lead-quality feedback. A consultation starts with locations, access and a verifiable business outcome. It does not pre-commit to a Maps rank, publication outcome or sales volume.
